Heads out hut skiing/snowshoeing above Carson Pass

**** There is still room left *****
On April 18, 19, and 20, 2008 (Fri-Sun) the RIM Club will head into Meiss Meadows (8,400 ft) for 3 days (2 nights) of backcountry touring north of Carson pass. Exploration of this secluded valley surrounded by peaks up to10,000 will be based from the Meiss Hut, which was built in the 1870’s as a cowboy line cabin. This is one of the most historic American ski huts and it is believed that Snowshoe Thompson stayed there. The hut is located near Meiss Lake at the base of a ridge perfect for backcounty skiing. Nearby peaks include Red Lakes Peak and Stevens Peak. The trip will begin from the Snow Park (permit) parking lot west of Carson pass (8,600 ft), pass through Mountain Juniper as the routes crosses over a mild pass at 8,800 ft. A gradual decent completes the 3.5 mile ski or showshoe to the hut.

The hut itself is a primitive two story A-frame cabin with plenty of character. It will sleep 8 comfortably on a combination of simply bunks and/or mattresses on the floor. A classic wood-burning cook stove keeps the place cozy. Recent improvements by the Forest Service include a composting toilet. Unlike most of the few other huts in use in California, RIM will have the hut to ourselves. Socially minded dogs are welcome. The trip will cost $70 each ($40 for hut, $30 for food) plus gas & snow park permit. Dogs are an extra $5. Space is limited - a $50 deposit will secure your spot. Camping outside the hut is negotiable if OK with those paying to sleep inside.
